Early or Late, Don’t Wait to Get Evaluated: Acupuncture for Facial Paralysis (Bell’s Palsy) 구안와사

Facial paralysis, commonly known as Bell’s palsy, can be a sudden and distressing condition. Patients often notice weakness or drooping on one side of the face, difficulty closing the eye, or changes in facial expression.

 Beyond appearance, many patients

find the loss of control in daily functions to be the most frustrating part. Difficulty fully closing one eye can lead to dryness and irritation. When eating or drinking, the lips may not move properly, causing water, food, or even saliva to leak. These symptoms can significantly affect confidence and quality of life.

Recovery can vary greatly from person to person. While early treatment is often associated with faster improvement, it is important to understand that treatment can still be beneficial even if time has passed.

In one case, a patient in his early 20s came in immediately after noticing symptoms and recovered rapidly within about one week with acupuncture and herbal support.

In contrast, other patients who began treatment later required more sessions and experienced a slower recovery process. However, even in cases where several years had passed since the

Onset, meaningful improvement was still possible with appropriate treatment.

For this reason, it is important not to assume that it is “too late.” Each case is different, and a proper evaluation can help determine the best approach.

At our clinic, treatment focuses on restoring nerve function and improving coordination of facial muscles. Acupuncture is applied not only to the affected areas but also to surrounding muscles—both directly and indirectly—to help improve control, strength, and symmetry.

Herbal medicine may be used to support internal balance and enhance recovery when appropriate.

In addition, cosmetic acupuncture techniques can be incorporated to improve muscle tone and facial symmetry, helping patients achieve both functional recovery and improved appearance. Many patients report higher satisfaction with this combined approach.

If you are experiencing facial paralysis—or even if it has been some time since onset—an evaluation can help determine what treatment options are still available.
